Second Saturdays, a monthly benefit for Oregon groups that work for peace, begins its second year Saturday, Jan.12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at SunnySide-Up, 116 NW 3rd St, Corvallis, in a fund-raiser for Oregon Peace Works, a Salem-based, Oregon-focused nonprofit.
Networking among the many diverse local groups that work throughout the state, OPW’s goal is to educate and activate people to work for peace, justice, and environmental protection
The January concert features The Flow, a new Corvallis-based band composed of five well-known, multi-talented Oregon musicians. The Flow plays primarily original music that is rock based, with strong influences of blues and acoustic folk. To form The Flow, Rita Brown (vocals and guitar) and Bill Smyth (guitar) recruited Don Thorp (vocals, drums), Mike Grattan (bass), and Susan Peck (keyboard).
Second Saturdays are sponsored by Alternatives to War, Veterans for Peace chapter 132, and The Troubadour Music Center, which features compact discs of performers in the series. Past musicians include Absolute, The Free Range Chix, the Childers-Carson Duo, Rhino Madness, Madera, the John Bliss Xtet, Critical Mass, Fred Towne, Crooked Kate, Smyth and Brown, and Cassandra Robertson; beneficiaries include Lt. Ehren Watada, Agustin Aguayo, Catalysts of Hope, Military Families Speak Out, Corvallis’ Counter Recruitment Program, Corvallis-Albany Assisting Iraqi Refugees, and PCUN.
A donation of $5.00 is suggested and all funds are presented to the concert beneficiary.
