6pm - Fiddler Rebecca Lomnicky will grace the stage as she puts fiddle to shoulder and sweeps us right off our feet with her amazing talent. Already, the Corvallis High School senior has an array of impressive awards, all testifying to her brilliance as a musician. To name a few: In 2005, Rebecca won the Junior Division of the U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Contest, an event judged by world renowned fiddlers Bonnie Rideout, Jan Tappan, and Janny Kirk. In both 2007 and 2008 she won the Corvallis Folklore Society Music Award, given to the high school student who best exemplifies the folk music tradition. She was chosen to travel to Italy with the Camerata Strings Orchestra in 2008 and on November 1st this year, Rebecca will be one of eight fiddlers competing in a major invitational fiddling event, the Glenfiddich International Scottish Fiddle Championship in Pitlochry, Scotland. Rebecca's impressive technical ability is matched by her love of the music and her interpretive style, true to Celtic traditions, yet uniquely her own. We thank Rebecca for donating her time and talent to the Second Saturdays Benefit Concert for the Jackson Street Youth Shelter. 7pm - "Circle of Life Improv Theater Troupe" is a creative group of theater students from Corvallis and Crescent Valley High Schools. Using a flexible format, the troupe designs their improvisational performances around various themes and sets, what they call "games." Very quickly the improvisational engines begin to roll, sparking and diverging into .... who knows what? That's the beauty of improv - crafted spontaneity. What we know for sure is that the Circle of Life Troupe consistently brings humor and youthful insights into their performances , not only delighting and engaging their audience but actually inviting them to participate in the show. "Circle of Life Improv Theatre Troupe is a perfect way to enjoy theatre that you help create," says the group's coach and mentor, Eric Napom. This is fun the whole family can enjoy and take part in. Napom is also artistic director of "Infinite Improv," a locally based adult theater group who performs various Corvallis venues as well as in Portland. When asked to define improv theater, Nepom offers this comparison: "Improv is to theater what jazz is to music." We thank Circle of Life Improv Theater Troupe for donating their time and talent to the Second Saturdays Benefit Concert for the Jackson Street Youth Shelter.

OCTOBER CONCERT BENEFICIARY

The Jackson Street Youth Shelter is a non-profit youth center serving Linn and Benton County's homeless, runaways, and other youth in crisis. In the midst of a devastating economic downturn, an increasing number of families are struggling financially and emotionally -all too often the upheaval disrupts the lives of the children as well. The Jackson Street Youth Shelter seeks to alleviate the crisis of youth homelessness by providing a safe, nurturing home-like environment for kids from 10-17. In a large comfortable house in downtown Corvallis, the shelter staff works to provide youth with balance and positive action in their lives. A host of services are designed to help guide them through difficult, often frightening times. Youth are offered a bed for the night and home cooked meals, all under caring adult supervision. Other services, based on individual need, include mentorship programs, counseling, help with school work, family mediation, and medical care.
