Second Saturdays at SunnySide Up, 116 NW Third St., 6-8 p.m., features the Green Lake Quartet. A $5.00 donation is suggested.
The March event will support War Resister and Whistleblower James Burmeister.
The Green Lake Quartet is the musical group who is stepping up to the plate for James Burmeister. These are young, talented, vibrant musicians who will bring their love and musical ability to our stage at Sunnyside Up Cafe. You will be impressed!
Green Lake Quartet
These four musicians got together as a quartet in 2006. All four musicians are either current or past members of the Corvallis Youth Symphony and the Corvallis Camerata Orchestra. In 2007 they attended the Green Lake Festival of Music in Wisconsin (that's where they got their name). In Wisconsin they received coaching from a number of world-class chamber groups, including the Amelia Piano Trio and the Biava String Quartet.
All four players are involved in other musical pursuits but enjoy playing together and hope to do so for a long time to come. Quartet members are as follows:
Patrick Yun, Violin 1
Brain Lach, Violin 2
Justin Chi, Viola
Alex Humphrey, Cello
The beneficiary for September is Iraq veteran and whistleblower, James Burmeister of Eugene. James was caught in an IED explosion while serving as a soldier in Iraq and has suffered immensely from the resulting physical and mental wounds. While serving in Iraq, James took part in what are called "bait and kill" teams, where Iraqis are lured into situations that make them sitting ducks, a position that makes it easy to kill them. They are frequently un-armed. James came to a deep personal awareness that he just couldn't go back into combat in Iraq. He instead went AWOL and fled to Canada where he spoke publicly about the war, the "bait and kill" techniques, and other experiences. Early this year, James decided to return to the US to face military court and try and get on with his life. The military courts were waiting for him. He was court martialed and sentenced to six months in prison. Once released, he will not be eligible for VA benefits, including any medical treatment for his injuries. James has been using his time to try and bring the truth to what is happening in Iraq. Please go to the following websites to read more about why James was selected as a Second Saturday beneficiary.
