The Svens, is getting a lot of attention these days with their amazing performances, mixing waves of “surf rock music” with original bread & beans “cowboy poetry.” (Is your curiosity piqued yet?) For those who haven’t had the chance to hear The Svens or aren’t familiar with the resurgent surf music sound, think of the band, “The Ventures” - and their big hit, “Walk Don’t Run” - that electric guitar style so popular in the early 60s. Add the bass, the sax, the drums and you have come just a little closer to understanding The Svens …. only you’re not there yet. Interwoven throughout The Svens’ own unique surf music sound are the poetic stories of The Sven’s lead guitarist, Viking. Local musician Laurie Childers says, “It’s like Zane Grey finally meets a Fender guitar.” The Svens band is picking up quite a following here in town, including full house gigs at Bombs Away Café. Band members include: StickySven on drums, SaxySven, BasSven, Sven on guitar, and Viking, the groups’ poet and lead guitarist. Here’s a small sample of what’s being said about The Svens:

“Viking's emotive guitar solos are matched by Rob Birdwell's evocative sax, supported by the whole band. The effect is intriguing, amusing and musically satisfying. I'm held to my seat and always surprised by the story's end. Just when you think you've guessed what will happen …. another twist explains it better.” -- Laurie Childers of local bands, Madera and River Rocks

“The Svens” are a local surf band from Corvallis, Oregon, playing in the genre of The Ventures ….. story teller and lead guitarist, “Viking,” is quite good … the story telling is vivid and entertaining.”

… a cowboy poetry surf band. I don’t think there’s anything quite like them in the whole world – or at least Corvallis ….. their latest CD release project … is pretty cool!” Ron Birdwell of XTEP and local improve band, Sideways Portal http://www.birdwellmusic.com/Blogger/2008/10/svens-blacksmith.html
